DELAYED HARVEST PROJECT:

Who would believe that the Neshannock Creek in Lawrence and Mercer
Counties contains an abundant Brown Drake Hatch! The same Brown Drake that you find on the Allegheny River,
Sinnemahoning, Kettle, and Pine Creeks. The same large May Fly brings large trout to the surface
to feed. As with all other eastern streams, the hatch of Drakes on the
Neshannock lasts for three or four days in late May or early June. The Neshannock begins where Cool Springs and other creeks combine at the eastern end of Mercer County. The stream then flows southwest through Mercer and Lawrence Counties, picking up tributaries like Beaver, Pine, Indian, and Potter Runs and the Little Neshannock near Neshannock Falls. The Neshannock flows into the Shenango River in downtown New Castle. On January 1st, 1991 a Delayed Harvest - Artificial Lure Area was established in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish Commission, the Neshannock Chapter of Trout Unlimited and some cooperative land owners. This area is accessible from the Covered Bridge Road. A historic covered bridge marks the lower boundary of the Delayed Harvest area. The area then continues upstream 2.7 miles with the upper boundary the base of the dam in Volant. (view map)
